.... The interest in home birth is increasing and is mirroring the interest in
alternative health care. With a skilled practitioner, and a low-risk
pregnancy, birth can take place in the home safely. Most risk factors can be screened out before the birth. Ninety percent of all births should be normal and require no interventions. Both parents need to be totally committed and comfortable with this option. After fully researching their options many parents are choosing to birth at home, the place where this experience traditionally took place for thousands of years. Please note that all home birth providers can provide water birth.
Please be aware of the different types of providers that offer home birth in the state of Illinois. There are family practice doctors, certified nurse midwives (CNM), and non-nurse midwives. It is critical that you fully
research their qualifications, training and background in depth. There are
no minimum standards for non-nurse or direct entry midwives unless they have become a certified professional midwife (CPM) which is recognized nationally but not by our state licensing. They do home visits to assess mothers and newborns, draw lab work, do photo therapy for jaundiced infants, run IV antibiotics, feeding tubes and other feeding intervention as well as lactation counseling. RNs who do this type of work are skilled in newborn care and lactation. These nurses are in private practice. They generally work with premies who need special medical care at home. They no not do childcare or housework.
....An increasing number of parents are realizing the benefits of self-hypnosis training as a facilitator of the birthing process. This involves attending classes, practicing and using the techniques to stay relaxed during labor. This can help avoid pain and interventions while reducing the length of labor. Parents who choose this option report that their babies are very calm and relaxed as well. Hypnobirthing certification is now available and there are many practitioners available. The mind has an incredible ability to control the body. There are some cultures that don't associate pain with birth and some of these claim not to experience birth as painful.
