Naturopathic Doctor
Naturopathic Medicine or Naturopathy is a complete health care system that utilizes a wide variety of natural healing therapies. Some of those therapies include: nutrition, herbal medicine, and physical medicine, which is the manipulation of muscles, bones, and the spine. A Naturopathic Physician (ND) is a primary care general practitioner trained as an expert in natural medicine.
Naturopathic medicine concentrates on Whole -Patient wellness--the medicine is tailored to the patient and emphasizes revention and self care. It attempts to find the underlying cause of the patient's condition rather than focusing solely on symptomatic treatment. Naturopathic physicians perform physical exams, lab testing, gyne exams, nutritional and dietary assessments, metabolic analysis, allergy testing, ex-rays, and other diagnostic tests. Naturopathic medical colleges are four year, graduate level medical schools with admissions requirements comparable to those of other medical schools.
There is no licensing or regulation for naturopaths in the state of Illinois. It is very important that you ask in depth questions about the training the practitioner has before working with them.

SPOTLIGHT:
Dorothy Reed Mendenhall (1874 - 1964)
"She was one of the first women to graduate from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1900. ...She carried out an influential study in Denmark in 1929, concluding that maternal and child health in the United States was damaged by the American propensity for technological intervention in the natural process of birth. In Midwifery in Denmark (1929) she advocated greater reliance on midwives and a greater trust in the natural processes."
